Pakistan’s Banks to Go Borderless in 2026 as Agent Interoperability Rolls Out Nationwide
Pakistan is preparing for a major shift in its banking landscape in 2026 with the rollout of agent interoperability, a move expected to significantly expand access to financial services across the country. The new system will allow customers to use any branchless banking agent, regardless of their bank or fintech provider.
The initiative brings commercial banks, microfinance banks, and fintech operators onto a shared platform, removing long-standing restrictions that tied customers to specific agent networks. This means deposits, withdrawals, and fund transfers can be carried out more easily, especially in rural and underserved areas where bank branches are limited.

According to the State Bank of Pakistan, more than 750,000 branchless banking agents are already operating nationwide. With interoperability, these agents will now serve multiple institutions, reducing costs for banks and improving convenience for users.
The system is being supported by modern cloud-based infrastructure, ensuring secure and instant transactions. Officials say the upgrade will boost financial inclusion, support small businesses, and reduce reliance on cash.
Experts believe this step will accelerate digital banking adoption, strengthen Pakistan’s payment ecosystem, and bring millions of unbanked citizens into the formal financial system, marking one of the most impactful banking reforms in recent years.
