Punjab’s New Cash Support Plan Aims to Bring Working Children Back to School
The Punjab government has unveiled a new initiative to tackle child labour by offering monthly stipends to families of underage children. The move is designed to ease financial pressure on low-income households and encourage parents to stop sending their children to work.
Under the programme, families with children below 18 years of age will qualify for conditional financial assistance if they withdraw their children from labour. Once enrolled, affected children will be admitted to formal schools and skill development programmes to support their education and future employability.

To ensure smooth execution, the provincial government plans to form special task committees and introduce a structured framework aimed at eliminating child labour across Punjab. Authorities have also invited proposals to revise existing child labour laws to better reflect current social and economic conditions.
Officials said the plan includes digital mapping and geo-tagging of working children, along with the launch of a dedicated helpline and rehabilitation centres for families in need. A province-wide socio-economic survey will identify eligible households.
The government believes the monthly stipend scheme will help break the cycle of poverty and child exploitation, while promoting education and long-term social development.
