Govt Mandates Energy-Efficient Products to Reduce Power Costs in Public Sector

The federal government has made energy-efficient products mandatory across public sector institutions to curb rising electricity costs and reduce pressure on the national power grid. The decision applies to all government offices, ministries, attached departments, and state-owned enterprises.

Under the new policy, only energy-efficient appliances such as LED lighting, inverter air conditioners, high-efficiency fans, and certified office equipment will be allowed for procurement. All purchases must comply with standards approved by the National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (NEECA).

Officials say the move aims to cut excessive power consumption in government buildings, which significantly contributes to high electricity bills and energy wastage. By switching to efficient technologies, the government expects substantial savings in operational costs and long-term reductions in carbon emissions.

Existing public buildings will also be gradually upgraded, with old and power-hungry equipment phased out in stages. Departments have been instructed to conduct energy audits and submit compliance reports.

The initiative aligns with Pakistan’s broader energy conservation strategy, focusing on sustainability, fiscal discipline, and responsible energy use. Authorities believe the policy will set an example for the private sector and households to adopt energy-efficient solutions nationwide.
