Net Metering Suspensions Shake Punjab Government Buildings
The net metering controversy in Pakistan has taken a new turn as several major government buildings in Punjab now face suspensions of their net metering facilities. The move follows directives from the federal government, causing uncertainty across public institutions.
Officials confirmed that the Punjab Energy Department instructed Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) to halt net metering at key locations, including the old and new Punjab Assembly buildings, Speaker House, People’s House, and the MPA Hostel. These suspensions affect solar energy systems previously approved for net metering.

Although the Punjab government had submitted all required applications and completed documentation for approval, the Power Division issued instructions last month to stop processing new net metering cases. This sudden halt has left both public institutions and private consumers unsure about the program’s future.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has also taken notice, requesting explanations from LESCO and other electricity distributors about the suspension.
Observers warn that the federal restrictions, applied even before official amendments to net metering regulations, are creating uncertainty for energy planning and may slow the adoption of solar power solutions across Punjab, raising concerns among both government offices and private stakeholders.
